Anti wrinkle injections are based on botulinum toxins. When injected under the skin, it causes the muscles in that area to relax, and therefore the wrinkles which were caused by that muscle’s contraction disappears.
With age, the muscles of the face begin to stiffen and contract, as well as lose part of their elasticity so that they don’t relax easily, which causes the wrinkles and creases to appear at the corners of these muscles (such as the corners of the eyes and mouth, and along the nasolabial fold).
Anti wrinkles injections are based on a chemical material known as Botulinum Toxin. When injected under the skin, it blocks the nerve signals to the muscles in these areas, making them lose their contractility and relax. As a result, the wrinkles in these areas (caused originally by the muscles stiffening) begin to disappear.
One fact that we should mention is that botulinum toxin treatments are not a new thing. They have been used for ages in treating common bone and muscle disorders due to their mode of action, such as back pain and leg muscle contraction, and recently as we’ll explain later, to treat TMDs and teeth grinding and clenching as well.
One of the main drawbacks of this technique is its longevity. Both face fillers and Botulinum toxin are extremely safe, non-invasive procedures, but they effects are very short lived. On average, they last about 3 to 4 months before their effects start to wear off and the procedure needs to be repeated. For the first time, the effect is usually on the short end of longevity, lasting about 3 months maximum, but with repeated injections, your body would start to get accommodated to their effects and they would last a bit longer.
In short, Anti wrinkles injections and dermal fillers have provided dentist with a variety of safe and non-invasive solutions to some problems that would normally need surgery or long term medications to treat, but their effects are still short-lived. Hopefully the future holds the answer in making these effects last longer, because that would be a complete game changer.
